Speaking of parties...this Summer's lineup looks HOT despite...

The party world is beaming and bristling with exciting news and tantalizing tidbits...so let's dive in the pool!

Speaking of pool...the hot pool parties coming up during the Gay Day weekend this year are over at the GayDayS side. Sofonda yearns for the good old days from One Mighty Weekend's "Reunion" pool parties where the hottest of hot men of all types (and in all color Speedo's) kept the water warm day and night. With the absence of the Reunion parties again in 2012, the boys will be over at GayDayS all week long, with events going from morning until late night. Four of the five nominated "Up and Coming DJs" from the JustCircuit Awards are spinning during the weekend, including the winner, DJ Justin Ryan, that hottie from New York and last year's winner, the uber-hot Brazilian, Gustavo Scorpio. As far as other pool parties, I will be skipping those radio contest pool parties this year for sure, not unlike their listeners have been doing for years. But alas! From what we hear through the grapevine, Reunion and Arabian Nights after hours will be back NEXT year...NEXT year sounds extremely exciting already! Ballroom after hours parties are NOT my cup of T. So, in one word and as Alan T always proclaims...NEXXXTTT! Bring me your hot, young, scantily clad men to the pool for further inspection!

Speaking of young...Miss Tracy "I don't play GIRL parties" Young apparently has returned to her roots (and do I spot grey in those roots?) and she has decided to actually play a girl party for Aqua Girl. We don't hear much from Tracy these days, as with other big name DJs from the past decade. Most people have been there and done that and want something fresh. The Circuit's new talent is FIERCE and Mama can't get enough of the Fierce Tease's and the Gustavo Scorpio's and the Justin Ryan's out there. They have the energy, passion and desire to turn it out each and every performance. You know I'll be front and center in 2012 at the best parties out there, blowing big ass air kisses to the best talent in the industry! MUAHHHH! Suite 4210! MUAHHH! Meet you there in TEN!

Speaking of kisses, I send big ass kisses to my darling Jeffrey Sanker for showing the world what a true party weekend should be with his successful White Party Palm Springs back in April. The singers, the DJs (with the exception of two self-promoting messes who came on stage advertising other events) and the fun, fun White Party crowd that always delivers, made my weekend tops! Jeffrey surrounds himself with amazing staff (I just adore Anil Patel and that hot Cameron Torres. It's not a party without Chris Kingry, with whom I spent much of my White Party time with this year! Darlings!) I just can't wait to see what kind of rabbit Jeffrey will pull out of his white top hat for 2013. He so deserved that JustCircuit Award for Producer of the Year, now didn't he! Take it from me...you will want to write this event in permanent ink on your calendar each and every year.

Speaking of White Party...it hasn't been since that black disco Diva Donna Summer performed at One Mighty Party and since that time that the Circuit has had such an amazing performance as we had with my friend and party sister Mary J. Blige. When I first caught wind "MJB" was performing, I thought they had hired Mark J. Baker (the producer) to entertain us and I strained eye muscles as they opened hyper-wide in utter surprise. But no, it was Mary J. Blige. I was with Miss Diva Thing all weekend and she simply loves her boys. She turned out an historic performance for us and made our Circuit peeps proud! Proud Mary kept on turning it out all night long! And you better believe we were rolling on Jeffrey's river!

Destinations on Sofonda's calendar this summer include Pensacola for Memorial Day weekend, GayDayS and various Prides in June, Provincetown for Independence 2012 at the Crown and Anchor and of course, Bill Hardt's San Diego Pride Parties, which are some of the best in the world. Look for my red bush and hot tush all over the Circuit this summer!

REVELATIONS::The 7th Annual JustCircuit Awards Gala was the PLACE TO BE during Winter Music Conference 2012::PEPPER COMES OUT! by Mickey Weems

The GALA was held March 25, 2012 during the final night of Winter Music Conference and was a who's who of celebrity, South Beach and Circuit

Some things get better with time.

The JustCircuit Awards have been going on for years – 2012 marked the 7^th one. But it was only last year that there was an event to celebrate the winners. Shane and Victor were astute enough to place the event within the Winter Music Conference (WMC), the music industry’s annual get-together in Miami for electronic dance music (EDM).

Last year’s event was a good start. This year’s JustCircuit Awards was proof that our DJs, our music and our scene are strong enough to gain the attention of the EDM world.

I was a little concerned that holding the Awards on Sunday March 25, the very last night of WMC, might be a problem. Nine straight days of parties and conferences might take the wind out of the event’s sails. In addition, 2012 saw the return of Ultra Music Festival within the time frame of WMC. The last day of Ultra, in fact, was that same Sunday.

My concern was unfounded. The magic of WMC was still very much in the air that night as people came to Chalk, a beautiful new club on 12^th and Washington in South Beach. Chalk is a pool hall and ping-pong joint that easily converts into a dance club. The space is classy with a quality sound system and friendly staff. This was the second event I’d seen that week at Chalk, which gets my vote as the best new space in SOBE.

Performances

The 2012 JustCircuit Awards was formatted as a typical WMC event: a showcase of EDM talent with a continuous flow of DJs, interspersed by singers (preferably) doing their numbers live over the DJ’s track, and all produced by the Miami Beach legendary promoter Edison Farrow (SoBeSocialClub.com).

WMC events are great places for performers to strut their stuff. I have seen lots phenomenal singers, from deep house favorites Dawn Tallman and Ultra Naté to the latest flavors like Eva and NiRé AllDai. The JC Awards stood out with the best events of the week as Barbara Tucker, Amuka, Shyra Sanchez, Alexis Salgado, Jason Walker and Pepper Mashay belted out some of their hits.

One of many outstanding performances was Barbara Tucker singing her latest dance song, “Respect.” It takes real nerve for anyone to take Aretha Franklin’s signature piece to the dance floor, and real talent to get away with it. Barbara proved she has nerve and talent to spare. As good as “Respect” is when remixed and polished in the studio, the song was even better when I heard Ms. Tucker sing it in Chalk, backed up by a fierce dancer on the floor and Up-and-Coming DJ Nominee Fierce Tease in the booth.

Keep in mind that I had seen Barbara speaking and performing over the prior week. When she was not hosting her own events (a panel on Monday at the WMC Beachplex, and also at "And Let the Singer Be Heard" at Oceans 10 on Wednesday), she made countless appearances at other parties, including the exclusive Tommy Boy VIP party. Sunday night marked the end of a very, very long week.

But you would not have known it from the energy Barbara put into her performance. Looking hot in a skin-tight silver pants, leather bustier and serious heels, she worked her number, earning enthusiastic approval from the crowd. Victor had this to say: “Barbara has proven once again that her talent is purely amazing.”

Revelation

In all my years covering Circuit events, I had never spoken with Pepper Mashay. I finally had my chance, and what an interview it was.

Pepper is a gracious woman and a true friend of the Gay community. Over ten years ago, a DJ friend of mine from a born-again background expressed personal conflict between his faith and his orientation to her. He said Pepper was completely supportive of him, assuring him that same-sex love is not a problem in God’s eyes.

I mentioned this story to Pepper, thanking her for her unfailing love for LGBT people. Then she told me she had come to the JustCircuit Awards with her girlfriend. And she did not mean “her friend who happens to be a girl.”

Not that this makes any difference in the long run. Pepper has proven herself to be family since way back, regardless of who was her partner. But it was nice to hear her speak of something she shares with us in the face of all the haters, and to meet the woman in her life. “I looked in the mirror and asked God to send me someone,” said Pepper, and that someone was Ellen.

The DJs that night included Chris Pappas, DJ Grind (Stephen Massey), Justin Ryan, Craig Gaibler and the aforementioned Fierce Tease (David Van Norman). After hearing a range of EDM genres, it was a pleasure to hear the Circuit sound, and that our music represents the best of several genres, picked and chosen to highlight the dancers rather than the DJ in the best of our “Divas on the Dance Floor” tradition.

I spoke with DJ Grind, a Cuban American whose family came over on a raft in 1963. Stephen grew up in Arizona, and went on to Georgetown, Oxford and Columbia universities where he studied politics, philosophy and international relations. He worked for the White House during the Clinton years and went Moscow for 3 1/2 years, studying the Russian Gay community and working with an AIDS organization.

“DJing is a hobby,” he told me, and it is obviously a hobby in which Grind excels. He played happy, joyful music that night. “I keep the music at 128-131 BPM,” he said, and he favors “progressive house, elektro, Europop, and UK pop music.” Along with Pappas, Ryan, Gaibler and Van Norman, Grind gave the crowd a banquet of what is happening now in our little Circuit world.

The music from this formidable line-up of DJs created a wonderful setting for what most WMC parties are: a chance for industry people to meet and greet, and for fans to come face to face with artists they had previously only heard but not seen.

And seen we were. I was part of a larger entourage comprised of renowned photographer Mike “Beachmonkey” Luczaj, DJ Lee Dagger of Bimbo Jones, DJ Dirty Cow (Carlos Vasquez), and a mysterious masked fashionista (the glamorous Melissa Brouard). We were but a few of the movers and shakers present: Derek Scott Graves, Frank Cerallo, city council member Michael Gongora, Ron Slomowicz, P. Tyrone Smith, Flavio, Silvio Carvana, Mike Pope and the Real Housewives of Miami (complete with camera crew).

With the success of the second annual JustCircuit Awards Gala, I look forward to next year’s event. Three’s a charm.

Aloha, my Circuit lovelies! After arriving in Hawaii and sadly learning that the Paradise Festival 2012 has been postponed at this time, I find myself lounging poolside at the Queen Kapiolani Hotel, sipping my mai tai, listening to MDNA, and trying to determine my favorite new Madonna song. Her new album is lyrically relevant and her collaborations are truly some of the cream of pop culture today. I am left to wonder why she decided to make a pop album for the tweens of today, instead of for her loyal fans that have followed her through decades of musical trends and scandals. And at fifty-three! I guess I was hoping for a more mature Madonna. That being said, the album is quite the hoot, and like albums of the past, Madge shows how she can relate to the kids of today. "I'm A Sinner" is very much "slap the church" with lyrics like "I'm a sinner; I like it that way." Her track "I'm Addicted" compares being in love to being addicted to drugs. Hmmm...is that what she meant when she mentioned "Molly" at Ultra Fest before she introduced Avicii back in March? If I had to choose my favorite, I would have to say that "Love Spent" struck a chord with me. Here she has lyrics like "Hold me like your money" and "Tell me that you want me; spend your love on me" and being the avid shopper that I am, how could I not ADORE this song? So, admittedly this album is at the very least entertaining. I am sure the remixes coming out will be causing quite the frenzy on the dance floors around the world and like it should. She IS the Queen of Pop!

Girl Gone Wild 
Madonna  (with remixes by Dave Aude & Avicii)

How can this not become the next dance floor smash hit? I would have to say that both remixes, while different in style, have found a place in my sets. It's a party song, so sip your Tangueray and feel the erotic the sound of the 808 drums as they make you feel like a girl gone wild. The drums pound rhythmically while the music slams into you like the animalistic thrusting of your last meaningful overnight relationship, followed by the lyrics floating by like the pleasurable moans of a girl gone wild. These are not the only remixes in the batch, but just the two that I deemed worthy to mention. Get ready for a lot of crotch grinding and dry humping on the dance floor. What a fabulous follow-up to "Give Me All Your Lovin" and remember, all you studly muffins out there, "Choke em, if they can't take a fuck."

Time To Go
Kwanza Jones 

I heard this self-declared "gladiator in a thong" turned her performance at Jeffery Sanker's White Party in Palm Springs. She has been described as a cross between Nicki Minaj and Lady Gaga with her elaborate costumes and commanding stage shows. The first single off her upcoming third album "Supercharged" is "Time To Go". This track features lyrics like "Tonight I come alive; I'm gonna rock this town" and "I'm rising up; can you see me now; I'm what you're looking for" which she confidently delivers, proving herself to be quite the contender among the dance Divas of Circuitland. With several remixes, done by Alex Cohen, Mixin Marc & Tony Svedja, Static Revenger and Gustavo Scorpio, there is one for every DJ and dance floor taste. I like both the Alex Cohen and Gustavo Scorpio remixes, as they do well serving my dance floor. Not only does Kwanza serve glamazon realness, this songstress is also an Ambassador of Equality, as she believes that marriage equality is not an LGBT issue, but a Civil Rights issue. She also believes that bullying and violence against the LGBT community are not LGBT issues but criminal ones. Rock on girl! You are now one of my new favorite super heroines. Go forth and empower the world!

Brokenhearted
Karmin

With their debut album "Hello" slated for release this month, I have to say this duo is hot! Brokenhearted is that song--you know the one--about waiting for that guy to call. And as most of you know, those guys who say they are going to call are the one's who don't. Yet, some of us sit hopefully by the phone waiting for it to ring. I love the hooks like "See I've been waiting all day for you to call me baby" and "Honest baby I'll do anything you want to, so can we finish what we started; don't leave me brokenhearted tonight". I am not a fan of hurry up and wait, but this song does make one wonder if he is worth it. I mean good sex sometimes is just that. The remix I am loving the most is done by my favorite duo Razor 'n Guido. These boys know how to turn out a remix. This one is chock full of energy, with throbbing beats, stabbings synths and tremendous build-ups from the original pioneers of the build-up! If you aren't featuring this, well, perhaps you aren't being featured at all...

Better Than I Know Myself 
Adam Lambert 

And speaking of being featured, while I was having a Pina Colada at Hula's, one of Hawaii's premiere hot spots, I was treated to this little ditty. I love me some Adam Lambert, and this is the first song to debut off his second studio album entitled Trespassing due out this month (May 2012). "Better Than I Know Myself" tells the story of a tumultuous love and the apology to the one which he couldn't live without. With lyrics like "Cold as ice and more bitter than a December winter night, that's how I treated you" and "I get kind of dark; let it go too far; I can be obnoxious at time, but try and see my heart" it is quite telling how relationships are all about compromise. Love is a beautiful thing wrapped within layers of sometimes-ugly emotions, but if the love is strong, it's well worth the journey. Mike Rizzo's remix is simply fabulous and it keeps the integrity of the song in tact so you can feel the emotional rollercoaster that is their love. I am definitely a fan of both Adam and this remix. I also hear that "Never Close Our Eyes" will be released as the second single off this album, and I so can't wait for those remixes to be released as well. This is one album I can't wait to hear.

Dance Again 
Jennifer Lopez featuring Pitbull 

Imagine my delight while having Pupus (appetizers) and sipping a Chi Chi at Tapa's Restaurant & Lanai Bar, when Miss Lopez's new single "Dance Again" gets some much-deserved airtime. I love this song! It is fun, the lyrics are catchy and it's filled with sexual innuendos. Have you seen the video? I have to say the faux orgy scene is muy caliente. It is a fabulous pop song about being in love and wanting to be together despite what the people might say. And OMG doesn't J-Lo look stunning. I guess getting married, having twins and then getting divorced agrees with her. Although I'm not a big fan of rap, I must say Pitbull delivers a stellar performance; his coherently clear sexual rhymes work well with Jennifer's sultry vocals. I was fortunate to get a copy of the remix by DJ Ranny & Bryan Reyes who both do a remarkable collaboration by making it very Circuit friendly. I can't imagine anyone not liking this one, as it’s a definite dance floor thriller, so get out there and dance and love and dance again!

In Love 
Lissat & Voltaxx featuring Lima

I love this track with the hook "I'm in love" wrapped in a beautiful piano arrangement and laid atop a very sexy disco-esque track. The lyrics "You can do what you want; you can say what you like and never change the way I feel, and if you don't understand I've got to keep on trying to show you how I really feel" are quite telling of how one feels when they are, as it were, in love. Be it infatuation, animal magnetism or actual feelings of love, it is something we all seem to be in search of. The Crazibiza remix reminds me why everyone loves being in love. Oh what a feeling!!! Don't sleep on this one, as it is a great summer feature. Work the pool party my darlings.

JOHN AND SHAUN:Let Love Conquer All - by Mickey Weems and featured in the May/June 2012 issue of JustCircuit.MAG

JOHN AND SHAUN: LET LOVE CONQUER ALL

At JustCircuit, we are all about the party.

But we are also all about responsibility, whether it be showing respect to our DJs, treating each other with courtesy, being adequately sober at an event and even practicing safer sex when we get lucky.

Add together all of our personal responsibility, and you get the basis for social good. Each of us is a strand that contributes to the moral fiber of the nation. The sum of our goodness is expressed in laws of compassion and justice.

But what happens when the laws reflect national paranoia rather than the common good? When the mechanisms of government are disabled to the point where one or two individuals can do harm to others with impunity and law enforcers look the other way?

Such is the case of John and Shaun. Like couples all over America, they are people who have rearranged their lives so they can be together. With jobs and the sometimes-physical distance (if the couple do not reside in the same town), these challenges can be formidable. It’s even worse when they are in different countries.

Since 9/11, overzealous and even spiteful immigration officials have hurt many international couples. Part of this is due to 9/11. Another factor, however, has been the lack of individual responsibility, when some foreigners marry their American friends to get a green card, or when Americans marry foreigners for some quick cash.

In our community, we have people who break the rules to get health benefits from their BFFs. Others do it to help couples stay together. A Gay man, for example, may marry his Lesbian friend’s foreign-born girlfriend so the women can stay together. I myself considered doing this a few years back.

Add up the lack of individual responsibility to uphold the law (whether for good or for ill) with national paranoia, and you get the nightmare that John and Shaun have been enduring since 2001. John is a Navy vet in Los Angeles and Shaun is a British citizen. One would think that, after an eleven-year commitment to each other, there would be a paper trail a mile wide indicating that these guys are legit. But 9/11 paranoia is aggravated by homophobia in their case, and it is made even worse by the Tea Party movement after the election of President Obama.

Any piss-ant immigration official can prevent Shaun from seeing John during those all-too-brief times each year they manage to get together. If that immigration officer gets wind that Shaun is in the USA to see his boyfriend, and if the officer clings to a Fox News worldview, Shaun faces humiliation in any number of ways:

Personal property ransacked before his eyes (search and seizure without warrant)

-Threats against his person and insults concerning his relationship with John

-Arrest, handcuffs and incarceration for no reason

-If detained, nobody bothers to tell John what happened to Shaun

...and the worst of all outcomes: refusal of entry.

These things can happen at any time when he transits from Britain to the US, and to a lesser degree when they fly from city to city within the US. It matters not that they were legally married in New York.

Stress on binational couples like John and Shaun is not limited to Gay couples. Straight couples have similar stories, especially those couples in which one is from Latin America. Heaven forbid that either is of Middle Eastern or South Asian descent.

The obvious solution is for our government to strike down the various Defense of (Straight) Marriage Acts (DOMAs) that have been pimped out by homophobes in the last ten years. I don’t believe anything will change in 2012, an election year in which those who champion our rights might have to forego change until the dust settles after November. In the meantime, we can pressure TSA and immigration officials to behave with at least baseline courtesy towards us all, even if we are Gay, Latin or (gasp) Muslim.

You can do this in a number of ways. Contact your Congressman. Lend a hand to the DOMA Project, an organization dedicated to stopping the deportations of our loved ones (stopthedeportations.com/blog).

Like I said, JustCircuit is all about the party. This also includes the political party that is theoretically on our side. Put pressure on the Democrats to demand civility and compassion for couples like John and Shaun, people who have a proven record of over ten years of dedication. This also includes our Straight sisters and brothers involved in binational relationships.

The current tragic mess of the Republican Party, despite heroic efforts of the Log Cabin children to make a difference, makes the GOP off-limits to us. Honestly, we have more of a chance (even if it the chance of a snowball in Hell) of influencing the Tea Party crazies, whose stance against government interference in Americans’ lives makes them our natural allies. Crazy is sometimes transformative for the good – just talk to your local drag queen.

Today my precious peeps marks what I will call the beginning of a DILEMMA. Just when you think you have everything you need in this big world, you find you are completely wrong. I have never had much need for anything larger then my HUMMER and maybe my little puddle jumper Sofonda One flying at 35,000 feet and crammed with a few hundred of my favorite go-go boys, but recently I found even THOSE toys are entirely too small. I work hard for my goods, yet others feel entitled to have them. I realized this clearly during my fantastic trip to Miami for White Party Week over the Thanksgiving holiday weekend.

I had decided to scratch my entire planned Thanksgiving festivities and start a new tradition of entire days at the beach and lots of sleeping. So there I was asleep in my epic penthouse suite in Miami when all of a sudden this screaming, loud, obnoxious singing starts and continues until I awake. I rip off my eye mask, align my twins in my bra, throw off the twins on top of me and fumble around for my screaming iPhone 5 (yes, there are two in the world and one is mine...) My dear friend Emilio was on the other end telling me that he and wife Gloria (as in Estefan) would not take no for an answer. I had three hours to get myself primped and painted in holiday regalia and then take my pounding head, sore feet and all the rest of me to their lovely home on Star Island for some Cuban turkey. After the long day of friends and eating (and of course some “Do Tell” moments with a couple of band members!) I gathered myself and headed to South Beach for a nightcap. Since it was Thanksgiving and all of the fun was going to start on Friday, I decided to head to Twist, where I twisted off one or two or three (ok well maybe four) very dirty martinis made just the way I like them. Just like I like my men. Dirty, wet and ready to slide down Mama’s throat. But I digress.

Friday’s White Party at the Miami Seaquarium was to say the least exciting and new. The whole VIP and Uber VIP thing was quite interesting and of course as an UBER VIP, I was just fine! The early music by Joe Gauthreaux (the sexy hot stud muffin) was fun but when that Italian masterpiece DJ Pagano FINALLY took over, it was a delight for everyone! He certainly makes Mama’s tatas shake, our teeth rattle, and well, the rolls weren’t all that bad either...From what I could tell, everyone was bouncing, shaking and moving right along with me. I hear there was some sort of after hours at the Hilton, I believe they said, but I never heard anything else about it. Besides, the REAL after hours will ALWAYS be in my penthouse suite as party celebrities and VIPs join in the fun until damn, there came the sun...

On Saturday and once I arrived at the pool party, it was loaded with hot men, scantily clad just the way it should be. DJ Kio Kio ripped it up and to an apparently happy crowd.

At Saturday night’s event at Mekka, the standard was set even higher for future weekends because WHO KNEW…the Bugie, Jack Chang and Wayne G. combo made history and kept everyone in a total frenzy all night. The crowd stealer for the night was Jack Chang, however. He was the star and the crowd kept him spinning long after the other two had closed up and people were kiki’ing well into the morning. It’s just what a Saturday night has needed in Miami for a long, long time.

Now here comes Sunday and the day I have been waiting for all weekend. DJ Michael Tank and DJ Gustavo Scorpio took the helms at Muscle Beach. Michael’s opening set was just enough to make Mama squeal with delight, but darling, the second half came around and Gustavo, that Brazilian remixer and excellent kisser, insured that my outfit for the day remained entirely soaking wet from dancing.

Now here’s the juicy stuff. Gustavo joined me for some good times and I spent the next five days shopping with the Brazilian beach party DJ Master and God. As we shopped and chatted, he would continuously receive text messages about his set. Then, he received one from DJ Master Beater himself saying that he had wanted to visit him in the booth but it was “too well guarded”. Gustavo turned to me and said, “No it was not and if he had really wanted to see me, why wouldn’t he speak with me when I was standing next to him in the VIP area?” As we continued shopping, another email pings in from this same DJ who now demands two of Gustavo’s unreleased tracks. Isn’t it odd that this DJ has never met him, never spoken to him but can ask for something from him and then continue to ask over and over again. “INBOX” read Gustavo’s Facebook wall from the pesky and apparently entitled one. No communication had ever taken place between the two. Our shopping continued until we had to reserve our very own truck just to ship out our goods. A big, big truck.

You might think this would have been the end of the emails for free music handouts, but now the pesky one asked not one, not two, but THREE other DJs to call upon Gustavo to give away his not yet released music productions. I mean really...doesn’t he know that sometime you can’t share things with the general public just yet? He could care less because by his own admission, and in a final email, he stated that he had stolen the track he needed from a podcast in an email boast, flaming anyone he could along the way. A podcast promoting a not-for-profit event.

I do recall that this was the exact issue DJ Master Beater had experienced once before when the record labels came after him for what could only be described as copyright infringement of intellectual property. Now I am no attorney, but I hear it cost a pretty little penny to make it go away. I guess a Leopard can’t change its spots even if it is the true end of the world for this obsessed fan of Gustavo’s music. There’s no one left to save his world. The Party’s over! It takes so much more talent to produce the music that the people like this character simply push play to present and my sweet Gustavo is popping original tracks out faster than a welfare mom having babies in Mississippi.

OK! OK! I have to get going as the beach is screaming my name and so are the men waiting with Mojitos for my red flaming head to return. Until NEXT time, my little CHA CHA Queens I am out of here. TATAS are in order.

Diva On Vinyl: The End of the World as we Know It! by DJ Bugie

DJ Bugie reports on some fantastic new mixes for 2012!

As we welcome 2012, I realize that this is the year for change. As music evolves, we see more DJs becoming producers, which means better club mixes. Who would know what works a dance floor into a frenzy better then a DJ? That being said, during White Party Week's Saturday night White Starz event in Miami, held over Thanksgiving Weekend, I managed to sneak out of my VIP room and catch some new music being featured by both Wayne G. and Jack Chang. After finally closing down Mekka and well after sunrise, I headed back to the hotel for a quickie. No silly, a disco nap, although I did get to share a bed with two hotties. I was in need of some beauty sleep. I was not going to venture out to the Muscle Beach Party that Sunday afternoon, featuring the "I didn't get any sleep last night" look. Can I just tell you, I had the best time! I got to hang out with all the celebutants in the VIP section, and yes and it was FABULOUS! There we were, with complimentary cocktails flowing, good friends chatting about the highlights of the weekend and hot boys and girls all around us. While enjoying a Red Bull and chatting with Jack Chang, I was treated to the amazing sounds of DJ Gustavo Scorpio, who was featuring some of his remixes for several up and coming tracks and all unreleased at the time.

"Raise Your Hands " - C. Rod featuring Jason Walker

One of these remarkable remixes was "Raise Your Hands" originally produced by C. Rod and featuring Jason Walker on vocals. Jason sounds amazing, by the way, and this is one of his best songs ever. Gustavo's tribal drums and high-energy synths carry Jason's vocal out through the crowd like fireworks bursting in the night sky. Speaking of which, although the wild winds did not allow for the fireworks at Muscle Beach this year as per the Coast Guard's order, this song was one of the few contenders considered for the show. A very reliable source told me that it is being released very soon, with remixes by Chad Jack, Chris 'The Greek' Panaghi and of course Brazil's Gustavo Scorpio. Be on the look out for this, because it's a must have!  

"Hotel Nacional"  - Gloria Estefan 

Gloria Estefan has a second single that was just released. Yes, the follow up to her smash hit "Wepa" is "Hotel Nacional". This one features remixes by Mike Cruz and Dee Martello, along with the legendary Ralphi Rosario. This is going to be another sizzler for Gloria Estefan. I got a sneak peek at the tune at Muscle Beach when Gustavo played his remix and let me tell you, it is caliente to say the least. Being fabulous and in the know, I heard from my reliable source that there is a second batch of remixes being released. I am told that along with Gustavo Scorpio, there is a remix by Pablo Flores and even one by Razor 'N Guido. Talk about anxiously waiting the arrival of the postman. Now you know, a reporter never reveals his source, but I will say, thank you Frank Ceraolo!

"Crazy Crazy"  - Guinevere 

With Valentine's Day coming up in February, I know all you Circuit boys will be looking for Mr. Right or at the very least, looking for Mr. Right Now. I have found that there are three kinds of Mister's out there, and no, I am not talking about Mister Sister. There is the "Marrying Mr." and you know him. He's your match and the one you find if you are lucky enough. He would be your everything and give to you his always. Then there is the "Crazy Crazy Mr.", the one Guinevere is singing about. With such lyrics as "like a porn star, you better perform" and "I'm feelin' freaky boy, you know you want it" it's a bit obsessive compulsive and demanding. She blasts you with the chorus "Crazy crazy, you make me crazy all the time…baby baby, you make me lose my f*cking mind!" I mean how does one respond to that? Well if you've heard the fabulously done remix by DJ Escape and Tony Coluccio, you would respond by bumping and grinding on the dance floor. With the tribal drums pounding and the synths thrusting, one can't help but get hot and sweaty with a Mr. on the dance floor. If "Crazy Crazy" is not your thing, then there is lastly, Mr. "Naughty Naughty"!  

"Naughty Naughty"  - Porcelain Black 

Porcelain Black vamps with lyrics like "Definitely not an angel, but I'm not that evil, you know. I'm just so addicted to beautiful people." It comes off a bit shallow and vain but aren't we all at some point in our lives? In the chorus she exclaims, "Naughty, naughty, naughty, we just wanna party. It's all about fun and games until I hurt somebody." Who out there has not experienced that emotion? The player gets played. The Razor 'N Guido remix turns the party serving attitude over a tribal drum beat like only they know how. Speaking of Razor 'N Guido, they teamed up with DJ Skribble on a remix of Deborah Cox's "If It Wasn't For Love", so be sure to check that one out. HOT! So I say have at it my darlings, just remember to play safe and be honest. That way, you won't become the one no one wants to spend any time with. Remember, no matter how cute he is, somewhere in the world is someone who is sick of him.

Veva

Veva  - "H.E.R." 

On another note, I was turned on to a new Diva (or should I say "Veva"). She is an up and coming American pop singer and songwriter out of Orlando, Florida. Veva started her first music project singing in a band under the name of "Bombshell Overdose". Veva decided six months after joining that she would take the solo route, so she split up with the band in March of 2011. Now she is on her own and writing new songs, and collaborating with Justin Diggs and her manager Matthew Paul. It was Matthew who contacted me and turned me on to her by sending me the radio version of her single. "H.E.R." I thought, wow, she kind of reminds me of Ke$ha, but with a better voice (and just FYI, I love me some Ke$ha so don't be hating on me for the comparison...) This is to mark Veva's first single as a solo artist and it has just been released. Be on the look out for the remixes soon to be released sometime in 2012.

In closing, my lovelies, I would like to say let's make 2012 count! Let this be the year of change, as we head forward and upward towards the well deserved successes in all of our lives. There will be all kinds of fabulous new changes and a certain revamping of the Circuit, as we head toward bigger and better events. A reliable, international source tells me that "Sensation", one of the biggest and most well know raves in Europe, is scheduled to makes its U.S. debut sometime this year.

Every summer, thousands of men from around the globe flock to the sun drenched beaches of Fire Island Pines for their threeday,round-the-clock party, Ascension. Since its premiere six years ago, Ascension has grown from a single event on the
shore into the island’s most anticipated and busiest weekend.

This year’s festivities take place Friday, August 19th through Sunday, August 21st. As if to emphasize the heat of its sixth season, spicy Latino Jorge Lopez was chosen as the face of Ascension. It’s the first time a non-Caucasian model has been chosen to represent the island. Is this another sign of the browning of Gay-merica?

JC: Congratulations on being the island’s first Latino campaign model!

JL: Thanks so much. I wasn’t really aware that I was the first Latino model until recently. I was so honored to even be a part of the shoot. To be the face of the campaign is amazing.

JC: How did the shoot come about?

JL: I was initially put in contact with the team behind Fire Island’s Ascension Party through a photographer I regularly work with.

JC: Why do you think Fire Island Ascension chose to take a different direction this summer with their campaign?

JL: Honestly, I think I may have been chosen because my dark features help me to stand out more in the group pictures. I don’t think it was a decision to make the campaign more ethnic.

JC: Have you heard from any of the other models on the shoot?

JL: We all have stayed in regular touch since the photo-shoot. We actually all joined Bethenny Frankel from the Real Housewives of New York at a recent event.

JC: Were they happy for you or bummed that they weren’t
chosen?

JL: Sure, they were happy! They have all modeled for campaigns and won the top spot so I think they were happy giving me my five seconds of fame.

JC: What does it mean to the gay community that a Latino is being used to represent the quintessential gay male?

JL: It’s important to show the diversity of races and backgrounds that form the gay community. I try hard to keep myself looking good so I can represent Latinos in the best way possible.

JC: Last summer was all about Israelis. Are Latinos the new flavor of the summer?

JL: (Laughs) Latinos have always been the flavor of the summer. We were the original. People tend to look elsewhere every once in a while, but they always return to us. I can’t believe I just said that. I know I’m gonna get a lot of grief because of it. But, it’s true!

JC: In your experience, what do you believe are the best assets of a Latino man?

JL: Is that a trick question? It all depends. We are diverse so our assetsare varied. There are the obvious ones: ass, package and the like. I do think the way many Latino men handle themselves is sexy. We tend to be confident and masculine.

JC: What attracts guys to you?

JL: I am not quite sure what is it that I do, but so far I have been very lucky.

JC: Do Latinos face discrimination within the gay community?

JL: Maybe I have been lucky, but I have yet to encounter real discrimination in the community. I also think it is up to each of us to represent our individual communities in the best light possible. I mean, if I show up one day with a Fabio
ponytail and a cha-cha open button down shirt, then I would be asking for ridicule, right?

JC: How do you feel aboutguys affectionately calling you “papi”?

JL: Funny you ask. I’ve never liked anyone calling me “papi”. I see it as an insult; as a way of categorizing me into a specific ethnic box. It wasn’t until recently that I allowed one guy I was seeing to call me “papo” and to be honest with you, I liked it. I guess it all depends on who it comes from and when it is used. There is something sexy when you hear, “harder papo” (laughs).

JC: Latinos are known for being fiery in the bed, but also fiery in fights. Is that you?

JL: Oh Lord! Did my ex-boyfriend put you up to this? Yes, yes, yes! That is totally true. The same energy that I put in bed, I also put in loving that special person. But, when I get hurt, I hurt a lot and it comes out when fighting. We Latinos wear our heart on our sleeves and all emotions are intense. I know I make up for any fiery fights in bed and truly loving.

JC: It’s rare to see two Latinos together.

JL: Because we are very intense. Most times it is too much to deal with. My first boyfriend was Latino and boy oh boy, that took me a while to get over. I think I would love having a Latino boyfriend. Perhaps now I am ready for that intense action.

JC: Are you single?

JL: Very.

JC: What kind of guy are you attracted to?

JL: I am attracted to many different types. All of my previous boyfriends have been very different in looks and personalities. One physical characteristic is big: big hearts and bigger well, you know what I mean. But seriously, a guy has to be masculine and muscular to get my attention.

JC: Will this be your first time at Fire Island’s Ascension party?

JL: No, I have been going to the Ascension parties for years. I always have lots of fun at them. This year will be the first one I go to being single! Let’s see what happens. As long as there are no cameras on me, I’ll be fine!

JC: The main party is on the beach. Will you be packing your sun block?

JL: Yes, definitely. I get color easily and I burn. I also got my first colored tattoo since the photo shoot so sun block will be necessary.

JC: What should guys pack for their Fire Island weekend?

JL: A good number of hot, tight bathing suits, two pair of sunglasses, lube and condoms… you know the essentials.

JC: For those that haven’t been, can you describe Fire Island Pines?

JL: Oh boy, the parties on the Island are really what you want to make of them. They have very chilling pool side parties during the days, crazy hot muscle hunk pool parties later in the days and bayside parties at midday. Some of the best parties start at night and go until the wee hours of the morning. It is also important to mention that there are many cultural activities going on all week so get informed and take part in as many activities as you can.

JC: Do you recommend staying at the hotel or renting a beach house for Ascension Weekend?

JL: It really depends on what you want to do and for how long you want to be in the island. I recommend a beach house if there are many friends that are coming with you to celebrate and if you are staying for more than a few days. A hotel may be a better option if there are only a few guys sharing a room for the weekend.

JC: How will this year’s party out do past parties?

JL: Fire Island gets better every year. It is not only the parties, but the crowd keeps getting bigger and sexier.

JC: If someone reading this sees you at Ascension are you cool with him approaching you to say hi?

JL: Of course! I’m a friendly guy. I am very approachable, but I can also be a bit shy if there is too much attention around me. I’m usually fine after a drink or two.

JC: Is there a pick-up line that works on you?

JL: I like pick-up lines that are direct. I don’t like beating around the bush. I tend to be direct and I appreciate the same.

JC: What’s the worst thing to say when trying to pick up a Latin Stallion?

JL: Calling me “papi” or trying to say something in Spanish when you don’t speak the language. You’re better off telling me your best quality, what you like in me and what you want to do. Then, maybe we can take it from there.

There are so many revealing and exciting things happening in Sofonda’s wondrous perfect Circuit world. So Mama just needs to simply DIVE IN THE POOL and get down to business...

Alas, do you hear that sound? It’s that BEAT...that master BEAT...NO?

Didn’t think so...

A few artists recently got word that Masterbeat.com would NOT be paying out their commissions to them and other hardworking artists and would be closing the website. Of course, it took some major digging to get any answers early on. Some users got word of the closure only one day prior and via a friendly note telling them to “download their remaining credits....” and thanking them for the past three and a half years. Those not getting “the memo” will be left with memories of promised downloads and a much smaller downloadable investment in the website. Like GOOSE EGG…although Sofonda is sorry to see a good GLBT idea disappear, I’m even sorrier to see the public lose its investment and faith in any GLBT product. Perhaps if new management or owners come in to save the site, he or she PLUGS into PLAYING just what the public wants to hear.

Memorial Weekend Pensacola ???

Memorial Weekend Pensacola started off this year’s grand summer and the big events were back as Johnny Chisholm pulled off another fun filled weekend. Record numbers showed up on Pensacola Beach (to the tune of 70,000+) and it was “pitch-a-tent-city” out there.... The cute boys were EVERYWHERE. Quite a few handsome girls were in the mix. A little somethin’ somethin’ for everyone, darlings. Sofonda spent so much fabulous time with one of her favorite people in Pensacola, Miss Angie Denmon, who can bring calm to a hurricane with her beautiful demeanor and wisdom! The Wave Beach Party was hands-in-the-air incredible and Abracadabra made magic. These two parties have been on hiatus due in part to the poor economy and that pesky BP oil spill that hit the beautiful, white Florida beaches. But you can’t hold back a good Circuit event. Proof is in the pudding, my little Circuiteers.

The Wonder(ful) World of...Universal?

With a fraction of the attendees who once danced the night (and days) away at the various parties, three things during the weekend literally got my titties spinnin’: the Tunnel after hours, DJ Paulo at Friday night’s Tunnel after hours and the light show by Ross Berger at Hard Rock on Sunday. Delish! Despite the extremely low attendance at the parks, at the pool parties and at after hours (in the small ballroom of the hotel no less), the hard core Circuit came, featured and WORKED the events.

Who knew?

When Mama’s wrong, I admit it. The after hours really were fun in the hotel ballroom, and the DJs had me twisted up like a Twizzler! We closed each and every one of the events wanting more. Some disgruntled and surprised guests checked out Saturday morning when they discovered the night before that Arabian Nights was NOT in the mix. Apparently, these seasoned Circuit kweens forgot their glasses and didn’t read the fine print. Understandable, however. Word is that Arabian Nights will be back in 2012 (and hopefully before the predicted end of the world!) My world is the Circuit and you know...no matter how much people have tried to burn it down in Orlando the past two years, it’s still standing! Keep hope alive! 2012 will be a better year. I can see many fun years ahead in my crystal balls....

“It’s five o’clock somewhere.”

This expression refers to a drunk’s perspective of time. Somewhere in the world, it is five PM, the unofficial happy hour for people whose workday is ending. By extension, it is also 4:20 somewhere for the stoners out there.

For Circuiteers, it is always summer somewhere. The international nature of our parties has long since spread our glamour from north of the equator to south, so swimwear is a perennial consideration when prepping a wardrobe. When we throw in ocean cruises, the need for Speedos, board shorts and their waterproof crotch covering equivalent is indisputable. What was once a seasonal fashion item has shifted into a year long quest for the best. Frankly speaking, since JustCircuit has readers in every climate, we could justifiably have a swimsuit issue any time of the year.

New York State of Mind

But it wasn’t always this way. Back in the first exciting days of Gay liberation after Stonewall, the recently born Circuit took its first baby steps as les boys danced from Manhattan to Fire Island in a seasonal migration. Summer was when the clubs on Fire Island opened their doors as warmer weather followed the brutal Northeastern winter, and pool parties proliferated at various multi-million dollar beach houses.

Like white pants, swimsuits were put away come autumn, and the tribe huddled together on indoor NYC dance floors. This was the time of legendary spaces such as the Loft and Flamingo, making way for the internationally renowned Saint and Paradise Garage.

Baby steps became giant strides down the Atlantic Coast. The expansion of our parties to the southern tip of Florida firmly established the thump, thump, thump of the Gay men’s mating call with the wildly successful White and Winter Parties. Westward ho! and across the Rockies all the way to the Pacific gave us the addition of LA sunshine plus Palm Springs’ own pre-summer White Party. These things opened up the swimsuit option way past the Memorial Day to Labor Day stretch. But it wasn’t until the music spread to Down Under that we saw a true glimpse of Eternal Summer with Sidney and Mardi Gras. Rio de Janeiro, Puerto Vallarta, and Bangkok sealed the deal, as did Cape Town when the South Africans started their Mother City Queer Project party over a decade ago, held in December during their summertime peak.

Gay Day Weekend in Orlando set the pace with its annual party in the water park and daily pool parties, as did Toronto with its own outdoor water gun-toting shootout during Pride Weekend, which last year featured hot firefighters dousing boys with powerful hoses. But there was even more astonishment to come.

It’s Raining, Men

My eyes were opened to the prospect of Eternal Summer and the need for appropriate gear after talking with Paul Marin, the Australian Master of Light. He designed a rig for not just lights and video but also created an artificial downpour for the 2011 gcircuit’s Songkran Water Festival in Thailand.

Picture this: you are dancing in a big crowd with the latest lights and design on a hot Bangkok night, celebrating gCircuit’s Songkran Closing Party. Songkran is the Thai New Year festival held every April, and people all over the country throw water on each other as part of the festivities. In keeping with national custom, gCircuit could do no less.

On cue, water falls from above and drenches everyone, as if the heavens themselves obeyed the DJ. This also means, of course, that you do not waste a lot of time with hair gel, nor do you carry a cell phone without a means of waterproofing. You learn to guard yourself against the dangers of “unprotected text”.

Why We Do It

But water is not really the primary reason for swimsuits at Circuit events. There are two important factors that drive most Gay men: vanity and vanity. The sun causes the melanin levels in our skin to increase, and many of us become visibly darker wherever sunshine hits us, so we want the option of wearing the least amount of clothing when getting the maximum amount of daylight. Otherwise, our bodies might get the wrong kind of tan lines.

And of course there is package display for the more daring. Some of the kids among us have thrown caution to the winds, and strip to their designer underwear whenever they have the chance. But even though underwear may cover more skin than an ultra-skimpy bathing suit, there are still cultural sensibilities within our tribe that insist we wear clothing, however slight, that is designed for outdoor wear when we present ourselves outdoors. Unless the wearer is very young (as in clueless and therefore forgivable), prancing about in one’s underwear should be reserved for indoor parties. If then.

Why We’ll Do It Every Chance We Get

A noticeable trend in the Circuit has been a marked reduction in parties held in cities during their non-sunny seasons. Events have migrated to warmer times as well as climes, such as Philadelphia’s Blue Ball.

Part of this is due to a reduction in our collective income. When the economy was pumping, so were we. Parties were held in complete defiance to the whims of weather because boys in major cities simply wanted to dance all weekend. So we went to Philadelphia in January for MLK and to Chicago for Fireball in February during Valentine’s Day, a phenomenon that has long since passed into history. Outside of New Year’s celebrations on January 1 in NYC and elsewhere, we opt for sunshine when we congregate. The one place that gets away with largescale cold-weather parties is Montreal with its surplus of sizzling hot men. And Halloween’s in New Orleans is still hot enough for us to spill out of the clubs and dance on Bourbon Street. But with pants on, not swim trunks.

This is one reason why some parties have either disappeared or changed their dates. We truly do want to wear less.

The need for swimsuits in order to celebrate outdoors has shifted to a need for outdoor venues so we can wear swimsuits. This also means a shift away from excessively late after-hours parties and excessive use of party favors needed to fuel them. This is a good thing. It’s summer somewhere. I say, let the sun shine!

Summer is upon us and it’s time to hit the beaches, or at least a few beach parties. So while you are out shopping for your new favorite pair of aussieBum swimwear, to make your packaging more colorful and pop in the right places, might I suggest you get something FABULOUS to listen to as well.Yes, I am talking about the new Wynter Gordon EP. It is a sampling of what is coming out on her new album sometimes later this year. This mini compilation features herm newly released single “Til Death” and several unreleased songs and remixes. My favorite track would have to be “Buy My Love”; yes it’s a song about shopping. With lyrics like “...Let’s take a quick vacation; a little shopping spree; a fancy destination; we’ll spend it all on me...” How can you go wrong? Who doesn’t like a shopping spree or taking that quick vacation to a Circuit destination? Another summer treasure would have to be “Don’t Stop Me”. It’s about everyone’s favorite past time; you know the reason why many of you hotties out there attend these wondrous Circuit parties. Yes, my lovelies, it’s about finding Mr. Right or at the very least Mr. Right Now. I was quite intrigued by Miss Wynter when I first heard “Dirty Talk”; I thought hmmmmm...a possible Circuit anthem. Now that I have heard “With The Music I Die”, I am indeed a fan. So do yourself a favor and hunt this new compilation down. Don’t be that guy at the party asking, “Who is Wynter Gordon?” I hear she is slated for several nationwide performances at Gay Pride events.

Magic - Tony Moran

What a FABULOUS CD! I was immediately transported to an amazing destination. Like tasting treats at Godiva, I was served delectable morsels of vocals, each filled with wondrous melodies and exquisite harmonies, as well as Divas like Judy Torres on vocals. And then there is Tony Moran’s extensive musical production skill. The Sugar House Crew is brought to life in a Willy Wonka fashion. With tribal drum patterns dripping with gooey instrumentation and an array of colorful, vocal talents, I found this CD to be a sampling of Tony’s finest work to date. If you are a lover of vocals and a connoisseur of Circuit party treats, this album, like the everlasting gobstopper, is certainly a “must have” for your collection. I loved his tribute to the fan dancers with his rendition of “Silly Love Songs”, which brought to mind the Oompa Loompas dancing in the Wonka factory. I am definitely feeling the magic, while living “Viva La Vida”. So boys and girls, run don’t walk to your local retail store, or if you are like me, to your computer and download the Sugar House Crew today. Like any good delicacy, you have to get them before they are all gone. To sum up my love of this musical genius...I’ll just say The Sugar House Crew is magically delicious!!!!

The Best Thing I Never Had - Beyonce

Yes, it has been said I am not really a fan of Beyonce, and for the most part I haven’t been for quite some time. Now you Beyonce fans, keep reading. I am not bashing her. That being said I am now rethinking my fondness for the former Destiny’s Child front woman. I kinda got a bit bored listening to her music, as it started to sound very repetitive, that is, until I got a little ear sampling of a remix done by one of Brazil’s finest DJs. Yes, I am talking about DJ/Producer Gustavo Scorpio, who by the way, was named “Best Up and Coming DJ” in JustCircuit Magazine’s 6th Annual Awards Edition. His masterful remix of “The Best Thing I Never Had” features “what goes around comes around” as the hook and an emphasis on the lyrics “sucks to be you right now” made me love this song. The tribal rhythm alone will drive any dance floor in to frenzy. When this musical genius pours his talent into his remixing pot, much like a five star pastry chef, he creates pure delight. I am not sure if it will be released commercially or just giveno to the select few he deems worthy, but this is a summer slammer. If you get a chance to hear him DJ at your next Circuit destination, you’ll agree, this man is very talented.

Set Fire To The Rain - Adele

If you love this Diva as much as I do, you have her new CD “21” set to “repeat” on your device, and if you do, you’ll certainly know this song, which happens to be one of my favorites by the way. Well leave it to Moto Blanco to do a stunning remix. The production is lush and vibrant much like rain and fire. The bitter cold of scorned love and the fiery sting of a broken heart explode much like a volcano sending a tsunami of emotions to cover the dance floor. This has to be my favorite remix as of this moment. I have been featuring it every time I DJ. I was told that this was one of the songs on the album that should be remixed and like some psychic coincidence, it eventually was. There are a few other remixes out as well, but this is the summer feature...

The Deep Summer Circuit::JustCircuit.MAG's July/August 2011 issue has arrived!

This year may already be half over, yet the party Circuit has just gotten into full swing. The ever-changing Circuit continues its evolution in 2011 as record numbers have attended Pride events, Memorial Weekend in Pensacola, Purple Party Weekend in Dallas and White Party Palm Springs. Despite the good news, lower numbers attended events during the Gay Day Weekend in Orlando, which was once the behemoth of Circuit weekends. A troubled economy is mostly to blame, as we have much, much less to spend on travel and parties. Also, most in our community are "picking and choosing" the best produced, the best valued and the most imaginative events in which to attend. The economy is gradually coming back and we will all be attending more events in 2012. As things can only get better, let's keep the pressure on those responsible for bringing these events to us. We encourage them to keep the value high and above all, keep the events fresh and creative.

JustCircuit not only brings you a variety of coverage from many of this summer's top events, but our staff is also typically representing at the events, proving our desire to serve the Circuit. Additionally, JustCircuit Partner Events are everywhere this year. Some of these events are new and growing. Others are back and thriving. JustCircuit's Top Ten Summer Destinations by Michael Richards

Each year men and women alike travel the world to visit some of the most fabulous beaches. All of these destinations have one thing in common...they are among the most desirable places to be and be seen. This summer will be no different and with a little advanced information, you might just see yourself joining the gay men and women experiencing the desirable shores the world around.

Let's start our JustCircuit summer with one of the most beautiful beaches the US has to offer:

1) Pensacola Beach, Florida - This is the western-most point in the Florida Panhandle. Home of the whitest sand beaches you will ever see. Pensacola is a seaport on the Bay in Pensacola and connects to the Gulf of Mexico. Here you can find some of the most delicious and freshest seafood restaurants.

Every year the summer season kicks off with travelers from around the globe descending upon Pensacola for Memorial Day Weekend. I think it is safe to say that GLBT beach goers create a sight not to be missed on the beach. At the furthest most point of the beach you find what is called “Tent City”. Make sure to get your tickets for the Memorial Weekend events produced yearly by Johnny Chisholm and Emerald City Nightclub, the largest GLBT dance club in the Florida Panhandle.

2) Provincetown, Massachusetts - This beautiful New England water town has a rich history and its beaches are one of the best places to enjoy your summer day. While spending your day in the dunes, do a little research and find out how to spend your late afternoons. Whether it be sight-seeing, enjoying many of the cultural events that are always happening, seeing shows, movies, shopping, visiting galleries, gourmet dining, you’ll find your experience extremely relaxing. You must remember to get out early as this town closes by 1AM. When you end your nights early you have the incentive to start your days earlier. Still want more after 1AM? Visit Spiritus Pizza on Commercial Street--a real GLBT Town Hall meeting in the streets--where most are there to look rather than eat. Keep your ears open for the location of the many “after hours” events that happen frequently during holiday weekends. They are some of the best underground parties left in the Circuit.

3) Rehoboth Beach, Delaware – This beach side community has a year-round population of 1,327 (as of the 2010 census) and increases to a seasonal population of 25,000 with even larger seasonal population in the surrounding areas. Rehoboth is a name of Biblical appellation meaning “place [or space] for all”. The town often bills itself as “The Nation’s Summer Capital” due to the fact that it is a frequent summer vacation destination for Washington, DC residents as well as visitors from Maryland, Virginia and Pennsylvania. Vacationers are drawn for many reasons, including the town’s charm, artistic appeal and nightlife. Famous for its beaches, its wooden boardwalk, its eclectic shops, various amusements and countless sporting activities, Rehoboth Beach is known as one of the Mid-Atlantic Coast’s most popular LGBT getaways. The large number of gay-owned and operated businesses ironically are on a stretch of beach near Queen Street.

4) Fire Island – Pines, New York - The Pines is how it’s best known by visitors and residents alike and it’s home to many of New York’s “Who’s Who” for the summer. This part of Fire Island National Seashore hosts some of the most expensive real estate found there. This hamlet is not large and about one square mile in size. It boasts 700+ homes with 2/3 of the homes sporting swimming pools. The mode of transportation found here on foot, via the boardwalk and footpaths. Radio Flyers (Red Wagons) are your best way to carry items to your home or vacation rental. There are several ways to get to the Pines whether it be by personal water craft, ferry tender from the Sayville ferry port or via sea plane or helicopter, all which help keep this stretch of homes exclusive to the GLBT elite. Folklore for The Pines states that after a ship ran aground here with its freight of Christmas trees and holly, they began to grow wild in the late 19th century. The Pines is also a magnificent place to attend some of the summer’s most fabulous Circuit parties. It’s home to the Pines Party, the Ascension Party as well as many other fundraising efforts held for the summer’s elite. In addition to these events you can attend on any given weekend when the sun starts to fade an amazing T-dance as well. When the natives are sure the day-tripper’s have parted, the Pavilion and the Sip and Twirl both come to life.

5) Sitges, Spain – Best known for being situated between the hills and sea that is 35 kilometers from one the best host cities in the world as voted by JustCircuit.com... Barcelona! The beach side is best known for its GLBT visitors who come to tan, take in the sites, shop and enjoy the nightlife. Sitges has been called a miniature Ibiza or the St. Tropez of Spain. It’s also home to the new beachside parties that are produced by the Matinee Group (of Spain) during the popular and award-winning Circuit Festival in early August.

One of the best times to visit is obviously during your stay in Barcelona where the trip is relatively easy via train. Other times not to be missed are during the world-renowned Film Festival and Carnival, which in itself is a complete reason to be there. Carnival takes place between February and March, according to the liturgical calendar. According to the research it is said that this festival begins on Fat Thursday (Dijous Gras) and continues until after the burial of the Sardine (Ash Wednesday).

6) Mykonos, Greece – The most cosmopolitan island city within the Grecian islands is Mykonos. This island is home to approximately 9,320 inhabitants and is best known as the party destination of the isles. The island’s highest point is 1,119 ft. and it spans thirty-three square miles. The highest point of the island is primarily composed of solid granite. In order to meet the water needs for the island, the island requires use of a desalination process. In more recent years, the Mykonos Airport, once accepting only small aircraft flights now has been expanded into an international airport.

The summer attracts the elite Europeans and Grecians to the island’s nightlife as well as the summer’s newest and largest event known as XLSior Festival. Major talent is drawn from around the world to this event. Most of the fun on the island is found at the local beach bars but some of the more notable nightclubs are Space Dance, Paradise and Pierro’s Bar. If you prefer the beach bars then you must visit Cavo Paradiso, Super Paradise and Tropicana. This island is extremely rich in history. One of the most interesting facts I found is the explanation for the complex, winding paths through the center of town. They were built in maze-like fashion to confuse the pirates who occasionally would arrive in town and attempt to loot the residents and businesses. The mascot of Mykonos is a huge pelican named Pertros and has been for the mascot for the past fifty years. The town has given Pertros full and lawful access to any place he desires to visit on the island, so don’t shoo him away. He was there first and the locals will frown on your actions. He is the best known celebrity in town and will gladly pose for pictures with you.

7) Fort Lauderdale, Florida – Sometimes called “the Venice of America” due to its complex canal structure, this modern city boasts over ten-million visitors during the year. This Atlantic Ocean coastal city is home (on the northern side of the city) to largest growing gay-o-polis per capita known as Wilton Manors, which is also world headquarters for JustCircuit. The pristine beaches here are also home to a stretch of beach best known as Sebastian Street Beach, which is home for the GLBT sunbathers. Nearby hotels and numerous GLBT guesthouses make it easy to be close to the beach yet only minutes from the center of nightclub life. Since 2000, GLBT population has skyrocketed in Broward County, considered one of the most progressive communities in the US.

The GLBT nightlife of Fort Lauderdale is mostly all within Wilton Manors, also called The Island City due to it being completely surround by water. The one-mile stretch of nightlife is mostly found on Wilton Drive. Some of the more notable venues here are the Ramrod, Georgie’s Alibi, The Manor, Bill’s Filling Station, Boom and Sidelines. One of the most popular places to be seen on a Sunday during brunch is at Rosie’s Bar and Grill (formerly Hamburger Mary’s) in the heart of Wilton Manors. Some great times to be had in the city are during June’s Stonewall Festival.

8) South Beach Miami, Florida – South Beach is the original art deco district that the LGBT community has loved for over 25 years. From the beautiful beaches on Ocean drive, to the gay nightlife that you can find at Twist and Score every night of the week this is the place to be seen. Another happening place that you must visit while soaking up the sun and glamour of this over the top, must be seen at location is The Palace. If you have ever wondered where to see hot men, drag queens and great food then this is the place. Every day of the week is fun, but Sundays are definitely not the day to rest. So get out, get there early and enjoy.

Now three times a year the LGBT community shows it celebratory nature and descends upon this sun drenched haven. Every year you have Winter Party Festival followed by the ever growing Miami Pride and finally the award winning Care-Resource annual White Party events. Often called the Crown jewel of the circuit this is an event that you must not miss. Don’t forget to plan ahead for this one. Held each year over the Thanksgiving weekend. If you miss every other event here do not miss White Party.

9) Rio de Janeiro, Brazil – Rio has several hotspots that you definitely do not want to miss. The first is always the beach, and Farme Beach is the best place to see all the locals. It is said that when you get to the beach and go down the “stairway to heaven” enter to the right you and you will get the “gringo appeal” yet if you step off to the left you will have the local flavor to view. Now if you desire a bit more history, the Copa Cabana beach is still the major heart of the city. Regardless of where you go you will enjoy the water and the mountain views that just completely envelope your peripheral view. If that is not enough, the various views of men will definitely give your jaw something to drop about. Viewing the men by day is always a favorite past time for visitors and locals, but you can go to any of the city’s cafés and restaurants to take in the people watching. Sometimes sitting in the shade with a good group of friends while chatting and enjoying some of the local eateries is the best way. The city has many nighttime hotpots and many fun things to do. Plan well.

10) Tamarama Beach, Sydney, Australia – Sydney Australia has many reasons to visit but one of the more popular places to go while there is Tamarama Beach. It is located east of the city proper and is sometimes called GLAMARAMA because this is the place where wannabe trendsetters come to be seen, to sunbathe and swim. The most notable thing about this Beach is the large sculpture by Tae-Guen Yang of a hen called “Sitting Hen”. the beach It is located about one kilometer south of Bondi Beach and approximately two hundred meters north of Bronte Beach. Despite this beach being the most popular beach for the GLBT community, it is one of the more dangerous places to actually swim.

Sydney, Australia is a beautiful place to visit and most deserving of the attention it receives as being one of the world’s best places to see a parade. World famous for its Mardi Gras parades and parties, these Aussies can definitely put on a show.

A Winter Music Conference Special Report--JC at WMC: A Gay Oasis in a Sea of Straight Parties; by Mickey Weems and Shane Rogers

2011 is a big year for JustCircuit, the Circuit community, and LGBT electronic music lovers. For the first time, the Winter Music Conference (WMC) had an unapologetically Circuit-based event, sponsored by Victor Mauro and Shane Rogers. The party not only was the platform for announcing the winners of the 6th Annual JustCircuit Awards, but it also showcased four rising stars as they took turns in the DJ booth.

First, a little background on the WMC.

World’s Most Important EDM Conference

Every March in Miami, industry people from all over the world gather to discuss EDM (Electronic Dance Music), technological innovations and the prestigious International Dance Music Awards (IDMA).

And to party.

From Tuesday through Friday, major companies send their reps to present and attend workshops on the latest topics and products. That is during the day, mostly in the morning and early afternoon. But from Noon until 5AM, Tuesday through Sunday, venues all over SOBE and Miami in general compete with parties with different genres of electronic music. Big clubs bring in big-name DJs. Oceanside hotels host pool parties, and tiny spaces in restaurants and boutique hotels bring in sound systems for up-and-coming DJs to do their thing.

The heart of South Beach is Command Central. Take a walk down Washington, Collins, or Ocean Drive at 10 PM on any given night and you’ll hear an incredible number of happenings, from hip-hop to techno to dubstep to drum’n’bass, and increasingly, live performances, often backed by a DJ at the decks.

This year’s WMC featured a ton of live music. Too often, the musicians who are featured in EDM are relegated to the status of stage props for the DJ. Not much money and promotions go to singers whose vocal signatures are essential to our favorite anthems. But WMC 2011 got it right, and almost every party featured vocalists, bass players, conga drummers, rhythm guitars, and even saxophones. The list of live performers was fierce, including Robin S (she and I danced together at one point), Barbara Tucker, gospel great Melonie Daniels, Kenny Bovien, Dawn Tallman, Lisa Shaw, Joi Cardwell, Ultra Naté, Katherine Ellis, Kristine W, Crystal Waters, Vikter Duplaix and a fabulous South African newcomer, a woman named Bucie.

Sprinkled throughout the overwhelmingly Straight scene was a healthy dose of Queer artists. Transpeople were also in the mix, sometimes as spectators or, in the case of transwomen, performers. The WMC crowd is a tolerant one, so it is not impossible to glimpse an occasional LGBT couple dancing together in the midst of their Breeder peers. Every year, we see a further shift from tolerance to appreciation of our people. Nevertheless, it is still not a scene of total comfort in every event for us.

WMC Gone Gay

There were important exceptions this year. Score in the Lincoln Mall was consistently our place, as was Twist, which brings in great talent every year for WMC. The new S and M (Stand and Model) bar Mova was committed to us as well. In fact, Mova featured a DJ showcase event (for free, no less!) one night, and another with divas Crystal Waters, Katherine Ellis and Kristine W. the next.

I learned about the Mova diva deal from the W herself. I spoke with her at the IDMA. Kristine was a co-host for the awards ceremony, a glamour-fest that was as beautiful and classy as was she. Dressed in silver and looking all of seven feet tall, Ms. Goddess wanted first to show her appreciation to her Gay fans. “Thank you for the love and inspiration,” Kristine said, and then insisted I attend the Mova event. “This is just for the boys.” She also gave the boys some advice: step away from your computers and meet each other face to face. “Manhunt’s great, but my boys need face time.”

Mova was utterly Gay and committed to the EDM scene. Its biggest drawback for me was its constituency, movers-and-shakers more interested in seeing and being seen than dancing. Men who are not interested in breaking a sweat claimed Mova as their watering hole. Nevertheless, there was also room for my kind, so don’t think that a little booty shaking would be out of place amidst the dishing and posturing.

Dancing Queens

One party featured dancing Circuit DJs! Score hosted the Paradise Garage Party, an AIDS fundraiser sponsored by Gay Men’s Health Crisis (GMHC). Besides the talents of DJs Quentin Harris, Tony Smith, Danny Krivit, Richard Vasquez and vocalist Joi Cardwell (all of whom performed for free, mind you) backed by a bass guitar and drums. Among those dancing to what can accurately be called Gay men’s folksongs (think really good disco, housy soul and early Hi-NRG) were DJs Joe Gauthreaux, Abel Aguilera and Manny Lehman. DJ Joe Figares and promoter Adam Reinhart of Camp Entertainment also worked the dance floor.

Another queered-out event was a teeny-tiny thang thrown in the lobby of La Flora Hotel, one of those jewel-like boutique hotels tucked away in the midst of SOBE craziness. I stumbled upon it quite by accident. Or perhaps the spirits guided me there- the rhythms were Afrocentric house and my body told my mind: You Will Stop In! The event was Beauties and the Beat, all-female DJs who worked electronic-ashé fusion to its limits, along with live conga and sax. I danced my ass off, as did more than a few obviously LGBT couples. It was also where I danced with Robin S.

JustCircuit and LUX

Another sign that Gay people have “arrived” in the WMC was the JustCircuit Awards party at LUX. This bar was formerly Liquid, a Gay men’s hot spot back in the day.

LUX is in a great location in South Beach, but not an easy one to find. There is no evidence of its existence on the street, a challenge for its promoters to overcome if it is to succeed in the highly competitive Miami nightlife market. The actual club is upstairs. It has a beautifully-appointed interior, and the sound system rocks. The DJ booth is elevated not more than a few feet from the floor and sits opposite the entrance within eyeshot of almost every point in the space. The DJ is easily visible in the booth so that the DJ is more accessible to the attendees, a factor that too many other clubs do not take into consideration when they implement a floor plan. For a Gay male crowd, a distant DJ is a less effective artist. This is why we recognize the talents of a Straight hero like David Guetta (who may appear on a grand stage, completely removed from the people in godlike isolation) but love our own. We feel close to “our” DJs, and love it when that closeness is echoed in physical proximity.

Four up-and-coming DJs were in the line-up that evening: Luis Perez from San Diego, Fierce Tease from Louisville, Mike Pope from Atlanta and Gustavo Scorpio from Brazil. All of them were good. Perez gave us HI-NRG with a Circuit flair, Fierce Tease shot thunder from the booth with progressive beats interspersed with vocals, and Pope worked progressive tribal and a memorable shift into the spiritual.

The winner was Scorpio, a man whose name has generated a buzz well before this event. He was relentless in laying down a firm foundation in his pulse. Music was kept within a zone between joyful and dark. The effect was palpable intensity.

Like the Garage Party, DJs were in attendance. What was remarkable about them was their diversity: Frank Corr of Studio 54, Israeli-German Micky Friedmann, Miami-NYC favorite Tracy Young and DJ-drag queen Nina Flowers.

What the JC Awards Party Means for the Circuit

This party marks the point where Circuit sensibilities finally get a voice in the WMC line-up. I’ve been to events during WMC that featured Circuit DJs, but the sound coming from the booth was a generic one, reflecting the near-oppressive sound of Northern European house (typified by Dutch house) that has become the universal pattern for EDM. This is not to say such a sound is totally bad. But it can be stifling. WMC should represent niche music as well, such as Circuit, bhangra house from India, the various ritmos coming out of Cuba and Brazil, Colombian Afro-Indio fusion, soca house from Trinidad, Turkish house, Israeli House, the pervasive Roma beats that rock Mediterranean and Eastern European nations, whatever EDM is churning in Hong Kong, all the various flavors that humanity has created in the quest to make our people dance.

Besides the successful ventures by GMHC, Mova, Beauties and the Beat and JustCircuit, one nation’s DJs really stood out in 2011. South African DJs have made their mark on EDM in a big way by insisting on a place at the WMC table. DJ Black Coffee and his buddies did it by collaborating across all kinds of barriers: tribal, international (incorporating other Southern African nations besides South Africa), international (working with Dutch and American artists and industry people), and gender (maintaining a visible female presence in terms of management and performers).

I recommend we do the same thing. GMHC, Gay-friendly places in Miami, divas who love us (Barbara Tucker, Dawn Tallman, Ultra Naté, Kristine W, Katherine Ellis, Crystal Waters, Lisa Shaw etc.), divas who are us (Joi Cardwell) and the many DJs (Gay and Straight, men and women, the breathtaking range of Trans identities) who stand up for us every day- all of these are possible resources for us to make our presence known during WMC.

Insider Peek: Shane Rogers on the JustCircuit Awards and the Circuit Hall of Fame

The JustCircuit Awards and Circuit Hall of Fame were developed to help recognize the industry’s best talents, venues, cities and parties. There was a void in our community in recognizing these various parts and JustCircuit stepped up to the plate to fill that void.

After six years, our own Awards cycle has been copied by others.

None, however, have received the amount of publicity and credibility that the JustCircuit Awards have brought to the Circuit, mainly because the Awards are decided upon by the registered members of JustCircuit.com. Those individuals who have taken the time to register their free membership with JustCircuit.com show a sincere interest in the Circuit and LGBT events. They are very wise!

Nominations are taken from the general public, with the top five nominations going on to compete in the official ballot. Those who have registered on JustCircuit.com prior to February 1 of each year will be eligible to vote, keeping the ballot boxes from being “stuffed” by last-minute individuals who may want a particular nominee to win an award. Of the nearly 5,000 registered members, the voting in 2011 saw over 65% of the eligible members submit their ballot. Registered members of JustCircuit.com make up an excellent cross-section of the party world as a whole, and include DJs, artists, producers, club kids and more. No one knows the industry like our readers and members!

For 2011, the JustCircuit team, headed by Derek Scott Graves, Director of Publicity and Marketing, decided to hold onto the results tabulated March 1 in order to announce them at the Gala in South Beach. Promoters Omar Gonzales and Edison Farrow produce a weekly Sunday night event JUMP! and they allowed the JustCircuit Awards event to be their “theme” during the Winter Music Conference. This allowed JustCircuit to become a part of the weeklong Winter Music Conference event weekend as one of the closing parties. The attendance was incredible! In the audience were not only the weekly attendees of JUMP!, but also celebrities, DJs, recording artists and more, all perfectly positioned as part of Winter Music Conference. The event was streamed live via JustCircuit LIVE all night long (and a replay of the night’s music can be found on JustCircuitLIVE.com and JustCircuitAwards.com).

Also in the audience: Ron Slomowicz (DJ RON), RuPaul’s Drag Race stars Jessica Wild and the JustCircuit Award-winning DJ Nina Flowers, DJs Tracy Young and Mickey Friedmann, Miami nightlife personality Flavio Nisti, Chyna Girl and singers Ron Perkov and Sir Ivan, among others.

The uniqueness of this year’s Gala was based on the fact that four of the five nominated “Best Up and Coming DJs” provided music for the event. DJ Jerry Griffith, nominated in past years as well, was unfortunately unable to attend due to a previously booked engagement. DJ Gustavo Scorpio, who many consider a “DJ’s DJ,” was the headliner, coming from Brazil to make his US debut at the Gala. Scorpio is now booked across the US at events throughout the upcoming year and was winner in the JustCircuit Awards as “Best Up and Coming DJ”. JustCircuit’s own Victor Mauro and DJ Randy Bettis manager Erin Stacy were tapped to perform in a flagging number during the night in a live performance by MYKEL whose show involved a planned, innovative flash-mob-style sequence, where he picked two individuals out of the audience to flag with him.

Next year’s Awards cycle will be bigger and better than before. It is our hopes that we can incorporate more Circuit media to be involved in the Awards, taking an even larger cross-section of the Circuit/LGBT event community.

DJ of the Year: DJ PAULO; A JustCircuit.MAG interview

This past March, the registered members of JustCircuitcom voted in the 6th Annual JustCircuit Awards and the “Best DJ/Producer/Remixer” award went to DJ Paulo. He is internationally renowned and has played events all over the world. Originally born in Portugal, Paulo has been spinning on and off since high school, starting off with what he calls his “little Realistic” mixer. As his skills and sound grew, he took up a couple of residencies in clubs in Paris. Paulo’s career started to really take off for him about twelve years ago at Spin After Hours, held at the award-winning Avalon Nightclub in Los Angeles.

During the last twelve years, his sound broke through and resonated with fans, clubs and the Circuit as a whole. As more people took notice of his talents, he soon found himself among the ranks of headlining DJs at events like Black and Blue Festival in Montreal, The Saint-at-Large Black Party in New York, Ric Sena’s Alegria events and Peter Rauhofer’s Work! events in New York, Fire Island’s Pines Party and Dancing on the Bay events, Gay Day events in Orlando, both White Party events in Miami and Palm Springs, Mardi Gras in Sidney, Carnival in Rio de Janeiro and the Ministry of Sound in Taiwan. In addition to those events, Paulo has also played in Brazil, T hailand, Hong Kong, Amsterdam, London, Paris, Mexico City, Montreal, Toronto, Vancouver, and Ibiza. The world is indeed DJ Paulo’s oyster!

Paulo currently resides in Southern California also holds residencies at Alegria - NYC, Parking - Montreal, Score - Miami, Karmabeat - Mexico City, Hydrate – Chicago, and Atlas and Reflex – LA. For those who have never heard him spin, Paulo in his own words describes his music best: “I would first ask them where they feel music. If it’s in their hips, they’ll probably ‘get’ what I do. I’ve been called a Tribal DJ and yes, my music does have a lot of Latin and African undertones, but I can just as easily play progressive, anthem, or old school house while always keeping true to my sound. It all depends on the event I’m working on-whether a major circuit event, or a small intimate afterhours, I play foremost for the event I think that’s been one of fortes-working and playing for the crowd while keeping true to myself.”

On winning the Circuit’s Top Honor, Paulo is thankful that people appreciate what he is doing musically and he is totally motivated to keep serving up beats to everyone. When he performs whether it’s a club or a Circuit event, Paulo motivates everyone to come see him because he delivers remixes that you just can’t get anywhere. The distinct sound of tribal with drums that are hot and heavy energizes dancegoers to shake. With all the other options for gay men: music downloading, hook-up sites, sex clubs, etc… Paulo continues to best he can to provide something special and memorable when he spins. “It comes as no surprise to most that I respect and love what Lady Gaga is doing,” states Paulo. “I haven’t seen this much interest in an artist since Madonna. I would love the opportunity to work on an original remix with either one of them. I’ve always been a fan of Anne Lennox as well. I’ve always tried to push the envelope musically and those that truly know me know how “out of the box” or not mainstream I can be. Yes, its true, I love my big room productions like Gaga, Britney, or Madonna, but mixing it up with really sexy grooves or a sexy after-hours set is really where my heart musically is.”

Paulo also has built one of the hottest independent record labels with co-founding Pure Music productions. By working with Todd Dutkevitch to create top-ten progressive tracks on Beatport and various digital download sites. The duo arranged deep rhythms with original tracks such as “Ride The Beat”, “Slave To The Rhythm” and “The Brazilian Rainforest” for Tribo Recordings . Paulo’s releases include “Luv To Luv” and “Fascinated”, Suzanne Palmer remixes on *69 Records, Tommy Boy Records “Love Song”(an ode to the legendary Israeli songstress Ofra Haza) and “Lift It Up” by Inaya Day (which spent time at the number one spot on Billboard) and a remix for DJ Chus “Black Rain” on Stereo Productions. His unique mixes can be found on numerous DJ compilations and set lists.

When Paulo isn’t travelling the world, he is producing remixes and podcasts. Already in 2011, Paulo has been featured on four different releases including “The Kult of Miami” from Kult Records. We could not choose one over the other! We are getting ready to drop his first original production, which is a collaboration with Lula entitled ‘Master & Servant’ which we are very excited about! His original mix is super hot and even hotter than he looks, which is hard to imagine!“

When asked what his personal favorite memory. Paulo states “Too many to name. One stands out in my mind though--the Pines Party two years ago on Fire Island. Well my mix has the sound of the ocean in it, thus the visual with the ocean right there and the music, it was truly magical. Then at 6AM, right on my last song “Here Comes the Rain Again” by Eurythmics, it started pouring. Those that were there know how amazing it was will never forget it.”

OK, my little Circuiteers! Have I got some stuff to share with you this issue! I had finished washing my hair and decided to head down to Miami to take in a few of the annual Winter Party Festival events. I arrived in Miami Beach to find out that Winter Party was the week BEFORE...HOW FUNNY! Here’s a little thought from Sofonda to you Winter Party Festival planners...Next time you pick a date, go with it! We hear the airlines cost attendees huge “change of itinerary” fees, and some even lost hotel deposits. And those dollars didn’t get sent to Winter Party fundraiser’s offices in Washington, DC. Pity.

Well, the weekend certainly wasn’t a loss at all, thanks to the Winter Music Conference and, you better believe it, JustCircuit! Of course you know I was at the JustCircuit Awards Gala, which served as a closing party for the Conference Weekend and let me tell you it was a time to be had by all. When Momma walked in as she always does (fashionably late, or “late side of clock” one might say) it was literally a luscious feast for the Who’s Who. The talent that came to play was quite impressive. Luis Perez from San Diego opened the room but he can help close my door anytime; Fierce Tease of Ohio was on second, and oh he is certainly a tease modeling his briefs in his adver-teasing and then not revealing enough for me....NEXT TIME, sweetie... Then there was DJ Mike Pope, responsible for some HOT HOT SOUNDS in Atlanta and his musical whimsy was certainly enough to get the people dancing. Next came my dear Brazilian friend Gustavo Scorpio with his debut performance in the United States and ready to close out the night. What a delicious review of talent, featured at Edison Farrow and Omar Gonzales’ “JUMP!” night at LUX Nightclub, where Momma used to hang out with Madonna and other gal pals back in the day when it was called Club Liquid.

Okay, babies, let’s move on to White Party-Palm Springs. Talent – I am so exhausted from Talent. I have sooo many places that require my own talent. Having recently flown from one side of the world to the other, Sister Sofonda is at least ten shades of tired but I did manage see some of my peeps. And some of the things that I saw would make your head spin (and it did mine).

So picture this: It’s the Renaissance hotel in Plam Springs and Sofonda is trying to catch up on some of her beauty rest when the alarm sounds - not really a siren, but we will call the shrill sounds of the pool party sound check an “alarm” for now. It was indeed ALARMING... So the alarms are going off when I look outside over the balcony to see the 8:00AM sound check going off and it was like nails on the chalkboard. Hell, our after-after hours party had just ended shortly before this!

Looking down below, I spotted a dear friend and had to go say “HI” so I once again put on my face and went to speak with her. Yes it was a real HER – Ms. Martha Tang from Fly Life Music! She is such a dear soul and one of Sofonda’s favorite gal pals. This gem of a gem represented so much of the talent that was performing at the events. She had the Aussie glam Zoe Badwi and also the progressive group iSquare. Destiny, the lead Diva from iSquare, was purely a treasure, but three of her straight male group members weren’t all that comfortable around the boys. “You guys run back up to your room and watch the football game....while all of us Kweens and the boys get our party on....”

Well after that brief encounter, it was on to find some coffee since I had to be awake for the rest of the day. Well, low and behold, who should I run into but non other then the WPPS producer Jeffrey Sanker! He grabs me and says “Sofonda, I had no idea you were in town! Let’s talk...” So we did and it was good and it was long and it was fierce. I heard some things that I shouldn’t...well MUSN’T yet repeat. And they’re all GOOD, GOOD, GOOD! about some future events. But let’s get onto the meat and potatoes, so to speak. You simply can’t imagine what happend next.

Speed up a-little to the afternoon’s pool party and you have that HUNK of a man spinning at the pool party, DJ Manny Lehman. He and I are chatting fiercely when we smell some “special herbal scents” wafting down towards the DJ booth. We look up and standing on the balcony of that “new gay social media iPhone application” is a man fully clothed (like the application requires) trying enjoy his “smoke”. Well, I guess it IS California and that IS legal IF prescribed...Fierceness is indeed always welcomed...

So enough about the gossip; lets talk about some important news. Standing with Manny required a person to not be so fearful of heights as we towered above the crowd and stage. A gorgeous conversation ensued, when all of a sudden Manny says “OK, you and you turn around; you, on the stairs; you, on the landing, and all stand with your backs to me...” Was Momma witnessing a hijacking of the booth? Did the last DJ Star Fucker who came to say “HI” to Manny have a box cutter? Should I pull the FOD alarm and evacuate the pool? Not necessary, I learned. Since Manny had a few minutes and the sound from the stage was another shrilling performer, he decided to use the time to relieve - - - - - - you know....let it rain....Not push play, but WHIP OUT AND SPRAY...you get the picture.

Lovin’ this, I ran as fast as I could to catch his expression from the front side of the stage to see the smile on Manny’s face as he “relieved” himself whilst picking the next show track...It was priceless! I did get a picture of it but I promised I would not license the use of it to protect the names of the innocent bystanders (and shrilly performers).

Manny, until we see each other again, I will always remember you with a smile on your face, a song in your heart and a empty bladder...

Sofonda started her busy Circuit Season early this year, and so far the parties have been OUTSTANDING! I’ll be hitting all the colors this year, from Blue to Purple to White and I expect to see all my little Circuit Dumplings on the dance floor. Support your Circuit and buy those advanced tickets now! All-Vols: The Soul of the Circuit; by JustCircuit's Mickey Weems

The All-Volunteer Circuit events are "The Soul of the Circuit" according to JustCircuit's Mickey Weems

“According to the management at Project Lazarus (a home for the poorest of the poor who have AIDS), without Halloween’s they wouldn't be here today.”

This statement by John Ramsey of the Circuit weekend known as Halloween’s in New Orleans sums up the feelings of everyone with whom I spoke on all-volunteer Circuit events. Blake Baker of Dallas Purple Party echoes John’s statement: “The money we donate can make a difference as to whether someone lives or dies. It makes it all worth it.”

LGBT events across the USA and Canada raise money for people with AIDS and other worthy causes, including more than a few Circuit parties. Every promoter I know who runs a for-profit party donates time and money as well. But only a few events are completely volunteer events, such as Halloween’s in New Orleans, Dallas Purple Party, DC Cherry, Philadelphia's BlueBall and a new kid on the block, La-di-dah’s Fortitude.

It takes a special kind of insanity to run such enterprises. When asked how many times people told them they were crazy, spokespeople for the four events featured in this article were in resounding agreement.

John of Halloween's: “Daily. But it's worth it.”

Blake of Purple: “To say that I've been called crazy for doing all this is quite an understatement.”

Nick DeBiase of Fortitude: “Every day, repeatedly!”

Ryan Maxwell of BlueBall: “Many times we are told we are crazy for continuing to hold an annual Circuit event…So when told we are crazy, we just remind people of the nearly two million dollars we have returned to the community from the efforts of our events.”

For this article, I asked each spokesperson the same questions, and their answers tell us something about the hearts of four men who consistently put others before themselves. I just hope that after all the stress and drama, they still have fun doing it.

John Ramsey, Halloween’s in New Orleans: “They wouldn’t be here today”

JC: Tell us about your event and how it got started.

JOHN: Halloween's in New Orleans was started in 1984 as a small party for a group of friends and was "invitation only". It remained invitation only and grew rapidly until it opened to everyone a few years later. Halloween has grown into one of the largest LGBT weekends in the nation and the main event draws over 2,000 people. We also have over 300 Hosts, Benefactors and Patrons who donate funds each year, enabling us to keep party prices reasonable while still raising significant funds for our beneficiaries. While Hosts are mainly from the New Orleans area, we do have quite a few from all parts of the U.S. and Canada.

Each weekend consists of four events. We try to have new venues or new concepts each year but we always have our famous costume required dance extravaganza on Saturday. Halloween events have been held at the New Orleans Museum of Art, Mardi Gras World, the New Orleans Arena, the Municipal Auditorium, Aquarium of the Americas, House of Blues and others.

JC: Who are the beneficiaries?

Halloween's sole beneficiary has been Project Lazarus, a residential assisted living facility for people with HIV/AIDS in New Orleans. (Halloween's has also contributed to the local PFLAG chapter's student scholarship fund for many years.) To date, over $4.3 million dollars have been donated to Lazarus. According to the management at Project Lazarus, without Halloween's they wouldn't be here today.

JC: What kinds of challenges do you face when putting on an all-vol party?

JOHN: We're competing for limited financial resources from our core group of donors...there are many groups asking them for money! We're fortunate to have a loyal Host base and past officers usually serve in an advisory position to help guide newbie’s. There are also significant time commitments needed from our board and event committee members…We do an extensive post-event survey each year and we DO read the comments to help plan future events.

JC: Are younger people getting involved?

JOHN: Yes! Despite this being our 27th year of operation, we have several board members in their twenties and early thirties. We also have quite a few younger Hosts, thanks in part to a generous "matching donation program" by our corporate sponsor Avita Drugs.

JC: How many times were you told you were crazy for doing it?

JOHN: Daily. But it's worth it.

JC: Is what you do spiritual? Does an all-vol have a different vibe?

JOHN: Halloween's is a very important annual event to many in the New Orleans GLBT community. In fact, just weeks after Hurricane Katrina ravaged our city in 2005, a simple "block party" commemorated Halloween 22. Nearly 1,000 people attended.

JC: Do you plan for more than one event over the course of the year?

JOHN: We have four large events over Halloween weekend plus six to eight "Host Parties" to serve as recruitment events as well as social mixers. Many of our Hosts own fabulous New Orleans homes and each party is a treat!

Dr. Ryan Maxwell, BlueBall: “They still amaze me”

JC: Tell us about your event and how it got started.

RYAN: BlueBall was started in 1991 in Philadelphia during a difficult time in the LGBT community when gay rights were not recognized in society and the Gay community was being plagued by HIV and AIDS. BlueBall functioned as a charity dance event to help raise money and awareness in Philadelphia's LGBT community.

JC: Who are the beneficiaries?

RYAN: Sapphire Fund identifies three or four organizations annually that advance the LGBT community through education, advocacy, arts and cultural opportunities in addition to HIV/AIDS research, education, prevention and treatment. This year's beneficiaries are the William Way Community Center, the Mazzoni Center and Attic Youth Center.

JC: What kinds of challenges do you face when putting on an all-vol party?

RYAN: Our biggest challenge is the obvious one, time commitment. All of our board members and volunteers have jobs and careers of their own in addition to their volunteer work with the organization. Despite the Board's and volunteers’ obligation to their personal lives and careers, they still amaze me with their continued commitment and volunteerism that they devote to Sapphire Fund and our many events throughout the year.

JC: Are younger people getting involved?

RYAN: We are very lucky to have younger people getting involved in our mission. We have two annual youth scholarship programs that identify and honor an undergraduate student in majors of both Arts and Business who display community activism and excellence in their field of study and leadership.

JC: How many times were you told you were crazy for doing it?

RYAN: Many times we are told we are crazy for continuing to hold an annual Circuit event…So when told we are crazy, we just remind people of the nearly two million dollars we have returned to the community from the efforts of our events.

JC: Do you plan for more than one event over the course of the year?

RYAN: Sapphire Fund hosts many events throughout the calendar year. Annually we have: Blue Ball Emerge, our women's weekend dance event Casino Night and Silent Auction A Same Sex Dance Competition and Silent Auction in conjunction with Philadelphia Liberty Dance Challenge Tony Sparacino Memorial Scholarship Award Presentation and Fundraiser Sapphire Fund and IBA Business Scholarship Award Presentation and Fundraiser World AIDS Day Event Quarterly Donor Receptions

Blake Baker: “Eat, sleep and live Purple”

JC: Tell us about your event and how it got started.

BLAKE: Saul Flores started The Purple Foundation in 2001. There were so many of his friends and loved ones who had been detrimentally affected by HIV/AIDS that he felt there was something he needed to do. He founded the Purple Foundation to help raise much-needed funds for local charities.

JC: Who are the beneficiaries?

BLAKE: All proceeds from Purple Foundation events benefit AIDS Services of Dallas. Over the years our events have benefited several organizations, but we feel the work that ASD does is quite remarkable. They provide housing, medical care and job assistance to not only those living with HIV/AIDS but their families as well.

JC: What kinds of challenges do you face when putting on an all-vol party?

BLAKE: One of the biggest challenges when producing an all-volunteer event is finding people who will actually take the time to put in the hard work and in getting the community at-large involved. Doing these type of events truly takes a special kind of person. We all have real jobs and the work we do for Purple Party is done in our spare time. People really don't realize what all goes into producing events as big as Purple Party. Most people just show up and have fun, not realizing the months of planning and stress it took to create the event.

JC: Are younger people getting involved?

BLAKE: Younger people are definitely getting involved. There is a whole new generation of young men and women that are now attending dance events around the world and many of them are trying to get involved in volunteering. It is so exciting and heart-warming to see them with the same passion and dedication that many of the veteran members of this organization have. It's like it has rejuvenated the spirit and energy in all of us.

JC: How many times were you told you were crazy for doing it?

BLAKE: To say that I've been called crazy for doing all this is quite an understatement. In all seriousness I've basically dedicated my life to this organization. For the past six years I have done nothing but eat, sleep and live PURPLE. But all the hard work, stress, blood, sweat and tears have been more than worth it. I know all the money we have donated over the years has truly gone to make lives better. It makes it all worth it when we realize that whether a person lives or dies depends upon the monies we donate.

JC: Is what you do spiritual? Does an all-vol have a different vibe?

BLAKE: Producing all-volunteer events of this magnitude are a very spiritual and personally satisfying experience. Producing an all-volunteer event is very different than ones that are for-profit or ones that have paid staff members. The biggest difference is that this isn't our job, as we all have very demanding full-time careers and all of this is done after work and on weekends. We do it because we really want to, and not because we are getting paid to do it. The passion we have for doing this comes across in how much care we put into the events.

JC: Do you plan for more than one event over the course of the year?

BLAKE: Our signature weekend is Dallas Purple Party, but we also do the Sunday Tea Dance during Dallas Pride, "Spectrum" and usually "Pump!", which is a Purple Pre-Party.

JC: What kinds of challenges do you face when putting on an all-vol party?

NICK: Coordinating and producing all of the events is a challenge. Volunteers are great but sometimes not everyone delivers, so you have to have some dedicated people that you know you can count on 100% to make sure you meet your deadlines.

JC: Are younger people getting involved?

NICK: Fort Lauderdale is an older leaning GLBT community. The younger audience is coming to events but not volunteering as much yet. Hopefully they will next year.

JC: How many times were you told you were crazy for doing it?

NICK: Every day, repeatedly!

JC: Is what you do spiritual?

NICK: Very much so. Fortitude was started to create a foundation to honor the memory of my mother who passed away last year from cancer, and so the entire weekend has its genesis in giving back to honor those we have loved and lost.

JC: Do you plan for more than one event over the course of the year?

NICK: We have thirteen events just the weekend of Fortitude. We think that is enough. Well, at least for our first year.

OK OK OK, there seems to be alot of Scheiße (SCHEISSE = SHIT) going on these day days my little Dumplings...I thought I was going to miss my deadline since I was on the “largest Gay cruise” evah. Might I say I should have stayed HOME? But had I done that I would not be able to tell you what happened and we all know that Momma Peters raised me right. She always said, “If someone has nothing nice to say about anything or anyone, come sit next to me so that I can listen to your plights…”

I just got off a cruise on the “nation of why not”, otherwise now widely known as the “why not let loose” cruise line. From what we saw, someone DID let loose and they did it RIGHT in the middle of the dance floor. Rumors have it that some poor and twisted young gentleman had a so-called epileptic seizure in the middle of the dance floor and his bowels were saying something totally different. Not since Tony Moran played the Saint-at-Large’s Black Party at Roseland Ballroom have we had to deal with such shitty dance floor consequences. This was indeed the “Incontinence Party” of all Incontinence Parties…I guess it all DEPENDS on how you look at the situation…but I regress.

Now onto the meat and potatoes of this Scheiße – ty adventure. Having come from my annual wardrobe-shopping trip in Milan with fabulous outfits made especially for this cruise, I arrived with shopping bag in hand to the boat. My VIP status allowed me express entry and since the only heavily panting animals were the passengers on this tug I was in my multi leveled suite, in my new digs and on deck with cocktail in hand in less than a half-hour, which must be a record for me. Normally picking an outfit is troublesome, but thanks to Dior it was simply easy. Thank you Christian! Shopping with you is always a thrill and a joy! XOX!

BORING – THAT is all I have say about amateurs whose irresponsibility can really kill my BUZZ!

After a long night of playing catch up with thousands of my peeps, I was getting some shuteye when my rest was interrupted by the sound of the ships horns, Rich Campbell’s voice and the Captain coming over the speakers in my chamber. You ask WHY??? So did I. Apparently nearly a dozen amateurs must have been partying like it was 1999 (or had visited Cabin #1999 on the boat that all cruisers were aware had all the Tupperware….) Even the lady of this lost city has stopped in from time to time, so I have been told. Well it seems they may have had simply too much to…eh…drink and needed to go to the infirmary. Also, it seems someone must have put the wrong pants on because unmentionables were found in their pockets…and we’re not talking about iPhones carrying only one application….GRINDR….going off like a ship’s PA screaming Alpha-Alpha-Alpha every few minutes…Can anyone say Bon Voyage to the passengers that were left in the Bahamas? How’s that for only DAY ONE?!!

A really dear friend of mine—Karen—called these amateurs “Messy Kweens” and I have to agree. You would have hoped that this would be the end of that but sadly NO. On Wednesday, the Customs and Border Protection agency (CBP) and the Homeland Security hotties came back for a visit and not because they wanted to attend a T-Dance either. From what I could gather, some group wanting Tupperware went to the K-marTinaX retailer located conveniently on Deck G to find out about some pricing and to make a long story short, found it all at bargain prices, took it all with them and took along the retailer as well. You might think they stopped there but from what we saw at least fifty others decided to join their Border Protection friends and disembark in cuffs not so unlike the ones Mama uses during Black Party Weekend in New York City...

Scheiße – is just the beginning of what we called the food package on the “White Castle of the Waterways”. If you wanted better, then you had to go to one of the other premium food sources on the boat and get something that might have rivaled Johnny Rockets. OH wait…they have one of those onboard but the only thing they do not have onboard is any food from the hours of 3 until 6 AM that was worth a damn. DAMN! That’s right…a cruise with no food options for 3 hours, with over 5,000 paid passengers. Who knew we needed to pack a spare lunchbox? Oh wait…they confiscated those too after Wednesday….

Thinking of my future and when I was asked to attend the same cruise next year, I exclaimed that I think I have to have to have the oil changed in my private jet or something like that. Really, I mean here is the formula:

No nighttime deck parties + Inside HOT + more fallouts than an undersized bra + “SCHIßE” on the dance floor + no laser shows on the stars + approximately $4,000 (to RCCL and Atlantis) = I am DONE here, dear dahlinks. NEXXXTTT….

OH WELL until our next issue, be careful in your travels and if you see me, I’ll deny I was ever on the Titanic….you know, the one that was destroyed by all those big rocks.

White Party Palm Springs is just one of those weekends you will never, ever forget. "It's the Gay Coachella," claims the award-winning producer and White Party Palm Springs creator Jeffrey Sanker. The spectacular event is always chock full of celebrity, music and lots of good Circuit fun. The Miami Herald once referred to Sanker as the "high priest of parties". He has maintained that title for over two decades, creating events across the country, from Miami and Orlando to Los Angeles and to the California desert with White Party, now in its 22nd year. What was his goal with WPPS and why Palm Springs? "It was the idea of getting (the parties) out of the clubs and into a beautiful, outdoor setting," stated Sanker. "It was originally meant to be a getaway weekend for people in Los Angeles. The T-Dance is my favorite part of the weekend's production. I love to pick the music set to fireworks and make people cry!" he adds.

And after producing the big weekend for over two decades, Sanker sees the "new generation" of party boys and girls even MORE excited than in any of the years past. "Most have never been to White Party and are excited about the music. It's turned into the largest Gay dance festival in the country! People are purchasing WPPS tickets from Montana to Australia and from Barcelona to Thailand. This will be a year which will exceed all expectations." It is not surprising that WPPS VIP passes and host hotel rooms were nearly sold out by the first week of February. Anyone who has ever experienced a Sanker event as a VIP will typically agree that it is the best value in the Circuit. Sanker wins that prize hands down.

Indeed, this year's long list of DJs and performers far surpasses the number of any weekends in recent memory. On Friday, April 8 at the "Boxers or Briefs Boot Camp Party", Australian dance music sensation Zoe Badwi kicks off the weekend performing "Release Me" and "Freefallin" with DJs Theresa and Hector Fonseca. At Saturday's pool party, Kat Graham, along with Jessie and the Toy Boys, entertain guests with DJs Manny Lehman, Bobby Blanco (Moto Blanco) and Luke Johnstone in the booth. Later Saturday night, the main event features DJs Joe Gauthreaux, Dave Aude and Peter Rauhofer, with a soon-to-be-announced superstar talent. It is well known throughout the world of parties that Sanker is extremely good at building high expectations for his main event performer but the secret usually doesn't stay a secret for too long. This year's main event secret performer speculation is at an all-time high as of mid-February. Other featured DJs for the weekend include Kimberly S., Pagano, Rosabel, Wayne G., the Freemasons and Chi Chi LaRue, among others. Singing sensations Wynter Gordon, Alexis Jordan and Eva Simone are also on the roster. Talent is still scheduled to be announced prior to the start of the big weekend. Adam Bouska, the famed photographer from the NOH8 photo protest campaign will also be on hand on Friday to add attendee's faces to the thousands he has photographed over the past several years to protest California's discriminatory Proposition 8, which denied equal rights to the GLBT community. Saturday's White Party promises the ultimate 3D experience and is billed to be "full of men, muscle and music" like never before. State of the art lighting, special effects and synchronized LED screens, along with a full-frequency digital sound system promise to turn your world inside out. Each year at the T-Dance, the world famous White Party Ferris Wheel swirls attendees atop the massive party crowd with panoramic views of Palm Springs. The newly added "Super Shot" thrill ride is also popular to the nearly 10,000 T-Dance attendees. Better get in line early or you'll miss the dance floor excitement and entertainers throughout the afternoon. The evening ends with an amazing fireworks display set to music chosen by, you guessed it, Jeffrey Sanker!

So, what keeps Jeffrey Sanker at the top of his game and doing what he loves to do for so long? "I'll keep dating twenty-four year olds," he quips. "I'll be doing this forever!" In fact, he is getting more involved again with the 2011 Gay Day weekend in Orlando, Florida. The June weekend once featured many of Sanker's produced events. "I will help to grow it back to all its glory." His promotions of this year's events is a possible door into 2012 and back into one of the most anticipated Circuit weekends of the year.
