DJ Randy Bettis reportedly tapped for Typhoon Lagoon event during Gay Day Weekend; Let's Go Play's "RIPTIDE" is Friday, June 3, 2011 in Orlando
Sources close to Let's Go Play's RIPTIDE event, the Typhoon Lagoon water park event during Orlando's Gay Day weekend in June, have revealed that DJ Randy Bettis will headline the event in 2011. The Disney theme park event, which in 2009 replaced the familiar and sold-out "Beach Ball" events once hosted by One Mighty Weekend's Johnny Chisholm, has garnered only half the attendance of previous years, which hit over 7,000 attendees in 2008. Let's Go Play's "Riptide" donates a portion of each ticket sold to the Broward House of Fort Lauderdale and others.
Gay Day weekend in Orlando, held during the first weekend in June, is continuing to be scaled back like never seen before with the announcement by Mark Baker Events "Wonder World" weekend that Arabian Nights after hours will not be held in 2011. Instead, Baker chose to have 2011's after hours events in the ballroom of his host hotel, the 900+ room Buena Vista Palace Resort and Spa, once home to promoter Johnny Chisholm's One Mighty Weekend and the world famous Reunion Pool Parties. Baker is hoping to top 2010's dismal attendance numbers, which lost the magic created in the previous years under Chisholm's reign. Baker dismissed concerns about last June's attendance by considering 2010 to be "a building year."
Baker is not yet publicly connected to the Let's Go Play event "Riptide" despite having registered the fictitious name "Beach Ball Orlando" filed February 20, 2010 in the State of Florida. Thursday's "Blu Skyyy" main event prior to the start of the Gay Day weekend, formerly known as One Mighty Weekend's "Jump Start" at the House of Blues venue, will also now be held in the host hotel. Other changes certain to effect the attendance of the weekend include pool parties at the host hotel which will now cost hotel guests $80.00 if purchased separately to attend according to Baker's website.
